5 Things To Do with Orange Peel!

One of the perks of working from home: you have time to squeeze fresh orange juice every morning ;)

Since hubby and I consume a lot of fresh oranges, we buy ours by the crate. I always leave the peel on the sink or kitchen counter top for a few hours after squeezing fresh juice because I like the smell of oranges in the kitchen. I even squeeze a peel or two against the sunlight and watch the burst of juice/oil with glee!

Anyway, I got to thinking about the orange peels and thought of ways I can use them further. I’m sure there are other ways to use orange peel but the ones below are what I have PERSONALLY tried so far.

Hand moisturizer. Turn the orange inside out and rub the inner part all over your hands for 1-2 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water. Your hands will smell soooo good after this!

Orange zest juice. Use a zester to get some orange zest. (Do not grate part of the white area.) Put the zest into a pitcher and top with water. I alternate this with lemon-flavored water and put it in a carafe. It’s beautiful on a perfectly laid out table for an evening of dining with family and friends ;)

Orange-flavored oil.Use the zester again to get about 1 tsp of orange zest. Put the zest in a small, clean bottle, pour cooking oil halfway, and close the bottle (I used a cork). I used olive oil but not the extra virgin kind as I find the odor and taste of EVOO too powerful. Store the oil for at least 3 days before using.

Kitchen decor and air freshener. Place the orange peel in a tall glass and leave on the kitchen window sill. It’s a great ‘all natural’ decor and freshens up the room too.

If you want a stronger and longer-lasting air freshener, boil the peel with a stick of cinnamon, some cloves, and a star anise.

Closet deodorizer.Using a sharp knife, carefully remove the orange part of the orange peel from the white part. Discard the white section and lay the orange ones on a plate or cooling rack and let completely them dry for about 3 days. Put the orange peel in a cheesecloth and tuck in a corner of your cabinet!

I have to admit, hubby here did not like this last one. Ooops!

I guess orange smelling closets is a personal thing so I took them out and placed them in our shoe rack in the garage. He.he.
